I Wrote A Good Omelet

By: Nikki Giovanni

I wrote a good omelet…and ate
a hot poem… after loving you

Buttoned my car…and drove my
coat home…in the rain…
after loving you

I goed on red…and stopped on
green…floating somewhere in between…
being here and being there…
after loving you

I rolled my bed…turned down
my hair…slightly
confused but…I don’t care…

Laid out my teeth…and gargled my
gown…then I stood
…and laid me down…

To sleep…
after loving you

One of the best ways to cultivate your own radiant brilliance or native talent is to look for excellence in other people. So if you suspect there’s some half-hidden or partially dormant reservoir of genius within you — a mother lode of intelligence that you have not been fully successful in tapping into — I suggest you make it a point to identify the genius in everyone you know. Whether it’s your cousin’s knack for flower arrangement or your co-worker’s telepathic capacity to read the moods of people she wants something from, you can fuel your own luminosity by noticing and appreciating others’.

On Sunday evening, I deleted Twitter and Tumblr off my phone, and besides for a five minute relapse this afternoon, they have stayed deleted. It was all just starting to feel too much like an eating disorder or like academic mania — being preoccupied with thoughts you don’t care about,…

Out Of The Way

i just saw my mother
and my brother not too long ago
but am only a passer by
      a distant thought
      followed by a sigh

i spoke to my father the other day
he could not hear my voice
      for the miles in between
it was a dream
      floating away downstream

i wrote a letter to my friend
and a smile i imagined ensued
but i was not able to see her face
      it was a desire
upon a shelf it found a place

For me - it is the realization that I cannot save the world.
The world is neither time nor money.
For me - it is that thing in front of me:
The man in prison for a horrible crime
who has become my brother
My neighbor’s sons who talk football to me
over the back fence
The yellow jackets who have made their home by my deck
All the things I say I don’t have time to do but really
don’t have time to don’t do
For me - it is the joy of being alive
For me - it is the living

I clock this in at 99 words. I wonder what I missed.

Back in the day when things were cool.

A few days ago, while hanging out with some friends and trying to decide what song to make an itunes genius mix from, I thought back to how I used to make mixes back in the day. Back in the day before I had a computer of my own, and before napster and the like were created. I would sit in my room on the floor listening to the radio and I would record the songs I wanted onto a cassette tape as I heard them play. I’m definitely not the only one who did this. I miss that!…It made you put a lot of time (literally) into your mix making, and so of course they were epic.

I used to listen to the radio. A lot. Z100 and the Z Morning Zoo…Q104.3 live at 5 and two for tuesdays…Howard Stern on 92.3 Krock…Hot97…and 95.5 when nothing else was good. Now call me nostalgic, but I miss those FM airwaves. They are my rail road car. Technology is always changing, the radio even though it’s still in existence is becoming more and more obsolete. Mix tapes used to be something we had to put more effort into, like most other things too, we had do them a little bit slower. Now everything is instant and effortless. I think that it takes the beauty out of it though. We are so used to things being easy, but its not going to be easy forever. I just hope that we can remember how to live without our luxuries when the time comes. Because it’s definitely coming.

Amidst the attention given to the sciences as how they can lead to the cure of all diseases and daily problems of mankind, I believe that the biggest breakthrough will be the realization that the arts, which are conventionally considered ‘useless,’ will be recognized as the whole reason why we ever try to live longer or live more prosperously.

slap bracelets were better

Ooooh the fun of the childhood “fad toy”!!!! Today kids are keepin it silly with these.

This word is meant to define me. Balance. Rolls off the tongue quite nicely doesn’t it? It is the word most happily associated with Libra’s. I am a Libra, which apparently makes me crave balance, strive for it, channel it. Balance is important, though at times it’s hard not to be swept away. Whether it be in a moment, by an idea, a person, or a project. The bigger picture sometimes gets fuzzy and sometimes its uncomfortable to bring it back into focus. Other times everything seems so clear and the puzzle pieces fit.

There is a second word that is associated with the scales of the zodiac. The word judgment. This one carries much harsher undertones. It’s sharp and unforgiving right down to the pronunciation. These two words being such opposites in sound and feeling it’s hard to believe they are both being used. Judgment (and please don’t cringe at the sound,) has its role to play of course and though I am aware that you will read this and interpret it as you will, I mean this in the best way possible. It comes in when it’s time to decide when to let yourself be swept away. Sometimes, you’ve got to tip the scales a little.

Dear monica,

This is how my garden grows…

Also, forgive me for uploading cell phone pictures…it was easier and of course it was, it’s why iphones exist. For scenarios exactly like this one. I’ve been conditioned, even my conditioning has been conditioned (10 pts. if you get the reference.) If this were a text I’d follow up the whole thing with a smiley face emoticon, but I can’t bring myself to take this there.

- Love me
